Batman Unburied
Batman is my favorite super hero. It’s an easy choice, really, because he’s also the best super hero. He has the best supporting cast, he fits any genre, and he’s ridiculous and stupid, like super heroes are meant to be.
It’s hard to say anything new with Batman, so most new versions are just moving around the same old chess pieces: Allies and villains in every possible configuration. When you know all the pieces, you’re really just looking for an interesting new pattern.
Batman Unburied delivers that pattern by starting off in a very unusual position: Bruce Wayne isn’t Batman because Thomas and Martha never died. Instead he’s a humble billionaire pathologist dealing with the victims of Gotham’s new Serial killer: the Harvester.
Despite living in a Bat-less world, Bruce Wayne has all the character traits we know and love: intellect, courage, and dangerous obsession. And as the Harvester ravages Gotham, some familiar faces turn up: Barbara Gordon, Edward Nygma, and Renee Montoya to name a few.
The cast is great: Winston Duke, Gina Rodriquez, Hasan Minhaj, Lance Riddick, Sam Witwer, Ashley Burch, and all three McElroy brothers populate the Gotham soundscape. And this twisty little mystery is a fun web to unravel whether you know their characters or not.
This one is dark and fun and available for free on Spotify. Check it out.
