A Hobby for All Seasons

The past couple weeks have taken us from 100+ degrees to cool, autumnal mornings, and if this year’s weather is anything like last year’s, we’re only a few short months away record-breaking cold.

It’s hard to keep an interest on your calendar all year long, especially one without a screen involved. But one of my favorite hobbies can be performed in any weather; in fact, every weather is the perfect weather for it.

I’m speaking, of course, of napping.

Cold, dreary winter? Why, that’s perfect weather to curl up under a blanket a drift off to sleep.

Mild, sunny spring? It’s finally nice enough to spend time outside, and that’s such a relief that it’s the perfect weather to crack the blinds and doze inside.

Hot, oppressive summer? The world’s on fire! It’s the perfect weather to retreat into a dark, quiet room with a fan and sleep away the hottest parts of the day.

Brisk, drizzly fall? That’s basically the soundtrack to sleep, and it’s the perfect weather to contemplate the inside of your eyelids for one to three hours.

Oh, naps, you’ve got it all. You’re free, relaxing, and the right for any weather. And you’re not proof that I’m getting old, because I’ve been napping regularly since age fifteen. You’re the unsung hero of hobbies… mostly because people don’t sing in their sleep. Here’s to you.
