Like a Version

At the risk of encouraging THE ALGORITHM, YouTube pushed a video series a few weeks ago that I’ve ended up really enjoying.

Like a Version is a recurring segment on the Australian Radio Station triple j. Artists come in to play a song they composed and cover a song by another artist. The originals are great, but there’s an extra layer of creativity to the covers that really sell the whole concept. Here’s the first one I saw.

And thus began my dive down two separate rabbit holes: Like a Version and The Last Dinner Party. I’ve found a lot that I enjoy about both.

On the Like a Version front, I started by scanning through for familiar names, which led me to this one.

“Read My Mind” was one of my on-repeat songs in my late high school, early college days, so this was a delightful discovery. Less delightful was discovering you can’t find it on Spotify due to the brief verse mistake. But Live Music, that’s what the kids want!

All right, I’ve got one more, a weirdly addictive reimagining of one of the best songs of the 2010’s, the Arctic Monkey’s “Do I Wanna Know?”

Fortunately, triple j has been doing this for quite a while, so there’s a lot of gold to be found in the Version mines. If you love a good cover, you might want to go digging.
