What to Watch: Um, Actually…
Remember last week when I went on and on about nerds? If not, this big button might refresh your memory…
Well, around the time I wrote that, I also found a show by nerds, for nerds, and dominated by nerds: Um, Actually from CollegeHumor.
It’s a game show run by CollegeHumor funny man Mike Trapp, in which internet personalities are read a series of statements about pop-culture nerdiness, each containing an inaccuracy. Contestants buzz in (at any time) to correct the host. There are no prizes, no money is at stake: just the desperate need to share that thing you know about that thing you’re passionate about.
I already love trivia games, and this is such a fun spin on them. Because don’t get me wrong, I love Jeopardy! but I’m not the kind of nerd who can REALLY excited about Aleutian Island Chain or Sports Trivia. But I CAN correct a guy in a suit about what language Han Solo is speaking in Star Wars, and, um, actually, I will do so fervently if given the opportunity.
There are different activities mixed in and the last question is always genuinely useful information in the Real Life Skills category which is a good reminder to step away from the Fan Wikis every once in a while and schedule a dentist appointment. And if the show gets something wrong, don’t worry! Part of the fun is correcting those nerds online afterwards.
It’s a great show. Give it a shot.
