Predicting This Year’s Top Halloween Costumes

Halloween is still a little over two months out, but honestly the part of the year between July Fourth and October Thirty-First is basically just fluff, anyway. And with that in mind, I’m starting the Halloween season up early by guessing this year’s hit Halloween costumes. This year is a particular challenge because most years, you can reasonably guess what’s going to be everywhere based on the biggest news stories/movies of the year, but we’ve had way too many news stories and way too few movies. But here are my best predictions:

Harley Quinn

Back when the first Suicide Squad movie came out, Harley Quinn costumes were all the rage, and that movie was a scorching hot mess. This year we got a good movie in The Suicide Squad, which will give those Harleys from years back a chance to recycle their costume and bring on new fans as well. I foresee a lot of women thrift-shopping red dresses and black boots and doing their best Jersey accents this year.

Vaccine

This is a costume too easy and topical NOT to do. People can write “Pfizer,” “Moderna,” or “J&J” on their shirts and show off that they’re vaccinated and shame vaccine holdouts fueling Delta’s rampage. Plus, you can always have fun with it, put some fake “microchips” on your vaccine costume to make fun of the conspiracy theorists.

Loki

Speaking of Variants, Loki is going to be EVERYWHERE this Halloween, mark my words. Why? Well, Tom Hiddleston remains terrific in the role, obviously. And based on the timeline madness of the show, this is going to be a crazy versatile costume. Order a pair of Loki horns on Etsy, and you can add it to any other costume to be _______ Loki. I’m genuinely looking forward to what people come up with for this one.

Bo Burham

Bo Burnham’s Inside special was fantastic and took Netflix by storm this year. I wasn’t surprised that I loved it. I’ve been a Bo Burnham fan for years. But given how his songs have completely infected TikTok and how simple the costumes were for the special, I think there will be hordes of Bo’s running rampant this Halloween. Make sure to choose your favorite Bo early.

Mask Pile

We all have a ton of masks from this past year, and a near-zero effort costume would be just wearing them all over your body. There’s going to be a million names for this costume: “What the Back of our Closets COULD Have Looked Like,” “Anti-Masker’s Worst Nightmare,” “the Future…” the list goes on, but as last-minute costumes go, this is probably the easiest in years.

Your Zoom/GoogleMeet/Skype Camera-Off Icon

Your teachers/colleagues/etc. have forgotten what you look like, anyway. This will be easier than introducing yourself!

Here’s hoping that there’s actually a real-life Halloween this year, but if not, we’ll just move it on to the internet like everything else in the past 18 months. I don’t know about you, but that sounds spoooooooky to me.
