The World’s So Scary I Almost Forgot Pride
Like, I didn’t forget Pride, but I did mean to post about it, and I’m really right up against the deadline here. But hey, here’s some Pride-Friendly Media that I’ve enjoyed in the past year.
Dimension 20 - Dungeons and Drag Queens: Starring Monet X Change, Bob the Drag Queen, Jujubee, and Alaska Thunderfuck, this mini-season pitted the Questing Queens against the underworld on a fun, intermittently heartfelt four-episode journey. In spite of some politicians’ views, Drag is not a crime; this party does commit a lot of crimes, though.
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chapell Roan: Yeah, I get it. Just saw her live at Red Hat Amphitheatre, too. Hell of a show.
Doctor Who - “Rogue”: I need to put some time aside to talk about Doctor Who in general and the 15th Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, in particular, but this was a very fun little episode this past season with guest star Jonathan Groff. I believe it holds the distinction of being the first open romance between the Doctor and a male character in the series. It’s also an episode immediately begging for a sequel.
Bottoms: Starring Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott, this might be the most unhinged coming-of-age movie I’ve ever seen. Rated R for several very good reasons, it’s not for the faint of heart. But my ribs hurt from laughing, so if you’re feeling brave, give it a try.
Dimension 20 - A Court of Fey and Flowers: That’s right, D20 is on this list twice. I make the list, I make the rules! I’ve been revisiting scenes from this one a lot in the past year, and damn if this season wasn’t an extra-welcoming space. Special shout-out goes to Omar Najam and his character, Prince Andhera, both for the ace representation, but also for constantly finding the exact funniest thing to say or do.
Hell Follows With Us by Andrew Joseph White: A Trans coming-of-age/post-apocalyptic horror novel follows Benji, escapee from a religious cult, trying to survive in a world ravaged by a monster virus and serious religious trauma. BODY HORROR AHOY.
Fat Ham: Look, I already told you about Fat Ham. I love Fat Ham. If you’ve read this far, you’ll probably love Fat Ham. Go see if you can find a showing of Fat Ham.
